US, Iran Resume Indirect Talks After Trump Rejects Proposal

Iran had presented a seven-day plan aimed at building trust and reopening the Strait of Hormuz under certain conditions. Trump rejected the proposal, but US and Iranian officials have continued discussions through mediators.
Qatar is playing a key role in the latest diplomatic efforts by passing messages between Washington and Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has received the US response to the seven-day plan through Qatari mediators and is expected to discuss it with officials in Tehran.
The latest discussions are focused on how the steps in the proposed plan would be carried out. According to officials briefed on the talks, the main disagreement is about the order of the steps rather than the parts of the plan itself.
The proposal is linked to an earlier June understanding between the two sides, which included steps involving Iran’s nuclear programme and the Strait of Hormuz. That earlier arrangement was followed by a short ceasefire before the situation worsened again.
Despite Trump’s rejection, the latest contacts show that indirect diplomacy between Washington and Tehran remains active. Qatar is continuing its efforts to bring the two sides closer and help find a possible path toward further talks.
