PIMS Fire: Newborn Survivor Dies After Treatment on Ventilator

9 News HD: A newborn who survived the deadly fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad has died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
According to hospital sources, the baby was being treated at PIMS Children’s Hospital and had been placed on a ventilator after being rescued from the nursery fire. The newborn died late Wednesday night while doctors were providing medical care.
The tragic fire broke out at the PIMS Mother and Child Hospital on August 26. Fourteen newborns lost their lives in the incident, while one baby was rescued alive from the affected nursery. The latest death has now taken the reported death toll from the fire to 15.
Nurse Razia Noreen had rescued the newborn from the burning nursery. Her efforts received widespread attention after she entered the fire-hit room and brought the baby to safety.
The newborn was later shifted for treatment and remained under medical care. Despite efforts to save the child, the baby could not survive.
The PIMS fire has also led to an inquiry into hospital safety arrangements. A government inquiry later identified an electrical problem as the most likely cause of the blaze and pointed to wider fire-safety issues at the hospital.
The death of the only newborn who initially survived the fire has added to the tragedy and renewed attention on patient safety and emergency arrangements at hospitals.
