9 News HD: Google and Constellation Energy have signed a major long-term agreement to expand nuclear power in the United States as demand for electricity continues to grow.
Under the 20-year power agreement, Constellation will invest more than $4.3 billion in new equipment and technology at 11 nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The work is expected to add 890 megawatts of new nuclear power to the PJM electricity grid.
The deal is aimed at providing Google with a steady supply of reliable, carbon-free electricity while also adding more power to the wider US grid. The first increase in nuclear capacity is expected to be delivered by 2028.
The agreement comes as Google continues to expand its data centers and artificial intelligence services, which require large amounts of electricity. The company is working with energy providers to secure reliable power for its growing technology operations.
Google and Constellation have also agreed to work together on the use of artificial intelligence in energy operations. Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise will be used to help improve power plant operations, speed up planning and help protect important energy systems.
The agreement is also expected to support jobs. Constellation said the project will help maintain around 4,400 existing jobs and create about 7,200 construction jobs during the work.
The new Google nuclear power deal highlights the growing link between artificial intelligence, technology and the need for reliable clean energy in the United States.
